Scientific Background
Reproductive endocrinology is built around two pituitary gonadotropins, FSH and LH, which act together on the gonads. Studying their combined action calls for a preparation that delivers both activities in a calibrated potency, and human menopausal gonadotropin has filled that role for decades.
HMG is extracted from the urine of postmenopausal donors, in whom circulating gonadotropins are naturally elevated. Its FSH and LH activities are calibrated in international units against reference standards, and the composition and batch consistency of human-derived preparations have been characterised in the published literature.
Because HMG combines both gonadotropin activities in one glycoprotein preparation, it is widely used as a reference material for gonadotropin receptor studies, follicle culture systems, and steroidogenesis models, complementing single-activity preparations such as recombinant FSH.
